Once our boid model has been created, with its simple physics and flocking behaviour included, the next stage is to add steering behaviours to it. At present, our boid will not move because it does not have any type of behaviour to adhere to and therefore cannot generate any steering forces, which are the basis of a flocking system.
Craig Reynolds described many different types of steering behaviours for his boids in his paper “Steering Behaviours for Autonomous Characters”. Some of these behaviours are described in further detail in the sections below:
